Choosing and care

GASTROCK is a German family business with a walking-stick-making tradition dating back to 1868. This model demonstrates that craftsmanship in the making and finishing of its wooden handle.

Will a 92 cm length suit you? If using the umbrella for support, compare its length with the distance from your wrist bone to the floor while standing upright in your usual shoes. When holding the handle, your shoulder should not rise and your elbow should remain slightly bent. Shortening this model has not been confirmed – if unsure about length, contact us before buying.

GASTROCK – walking-stick craftsmanship since 1868

GASTROCK is a German family business whose walking-stick-making tradition has reached the fifth generation. Natural wood, handcrafting and attention to detail also appear in this umbrella: its acacia handle is bent by hand from a single piece of wood.

For everyday use or a thoughtful gift, a product with its own history and character.

Support starts with a comfortable handle

Crook handle · RUNDHAKEN

A classic semicircular shape. Convenient to hang over your forearm when you briefly need a free hand.

Crossbar handle · FRITZ

A gently curved crossbar handle suitable for either hand. Both ends extend sideways, so the palm rests on the top while the fingers wrap underneath.

Broad anatomical handle · RELAX

A larger support surface for the palm. Available for the left or right hand when you want broader palm support.

Anatomical handle · COMFORT

A compact handle shaped for the palm. Choose left- or right-hand separately.

Universal handle · DERBY

A gently curved handle suitable for either hand. A classic everyday choice.

Broader universal handle · ERGONOMIC DERBY

The broader top gives the palm more room. Worth trying if a conventional handle feels too narrow.

How to choose walking-stick length

Find the length you need

Put on your usual shoes, stand upright and let your arms hang loosely. Ask someone to measure from your wrist bone to the floor. Note the measurement in centimetres and use it to choose the overall stick length, including handle and tip.

Check whether the length is suitable

The illustration shows a correctly sized stick: the person stands upright, their shoulder is not raised and the elbow is slightly bent. Check the same when your stick arrives. If holding the handle raises your shoulder, the stick may be too long. If you need to bend forwards, it may be too short.

How is stick length adapted?

Adjustable-length walking stick

Its length can be changed within the specified range. For example, if your measurement is 88 cm, choose a model whose range includes 88 cm and select the nearest suitable position.

A stick that can be shortened

Supplied longer and adapted by shortening according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Its original length must be at least the length you need. Before ordering, confirm who will shorten it and how.

Fixed-length stick that cannot be shortened

Choose a model already at the right length. If your measurement is 88 cm, a 92 cm product may be too long for support. Any shortening option must be explicitly stated in the product description.

If you choose a FISCHER handle or will use two sticks

GASTROCK recommends adding approximately 4 cm to your measured length. For example, an 88 cm measurement gives a starting guide of 92 cm. This exception does not automatically apply to every anatomical handle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The product description states the maximum user weight. This does not mean the stick is designed to carry full body weight. It assists walking and provides additional support. If you need stronger support, consult a professional about a suitable mobility aid.

If the stick helps reduce strain on one leg, it is generally held in the opposite hand: for example, in the left hand if the right leg is painful. Choose an anatomical handle for the hand in which you will use the stick. Follow your professional’s advice if they have instructed otherwise.

Slipping risk increases on wet, icy or uneven surfaces. A rubber tip does not eliminate this risk. For winter, consider a spike or spiked tip compatible with the specific model.

Replace a worn, cracked or damaged tip. Check its attachment regularly too. Choose a replacement of the correct size for the model; GASTROCK specifies tips with a steel insert for metal and carbon-fibre sticks.
